From a "She Shed" to Historic Downtown York

Rock Hill–based artist Nicki Degeneffe has been creating for most of her life, but her true passion emerged in clay. For Nicki, pottery is more than a craft—it is a creative outlet that connects her love of craftsmanship, community, and personal growth.

After more than two decades in corporate payroll management, Nicki decided it was time for a change. In 2020, a friend dropped off a kiln in her carport, sparking the start of something new. She bought her first wheel and transformed her backyard “She Shed” into a small studio. As her shelves filled and her home overflowed with pottery, she knew it was time to take a leap. In 2021, she left corporate life behind to return to her creative roots full-time.

Where Clay Meets Community

Nicki opened Spinning Out Pottery Studio to make pottery approachable, joyful, and community-driven. Known for her patience and down-to-earth teaching style, she encourages every student to embrace imperfection, learn through failure, and find confidence in creating something by hand.

What started as a personal journey quickly evolved into a movement. Today, Spinning Out thrives as a working studio and a gathering place where handcraft and human connection come together to create something greater than any single piece of pottery.
